The University Career Center is currently recruiting for Peer Career Assistants (PCAs) for 2013-2014. The application deadline is Wednesday, April 10.
PCAs are students who are trained to assist with outreach activities and services in the University Career Center (UCC). Their responsibilities include promoting the services of the UCC, presenting to student organizations and residence halls, critiquing student resumes, assisting with job fairs, managing the UCC's social networking sites, and working on special projects. They are supervised by the Senior Assistant Director and trained thoroughly to develop the skills and expertise that is needed to assist fellow students with career-related needs. PCA positions are paid.
The PCA time commitment is typically 12 hours per week, consisting of:
- Weekly (Monday-Friday) office hours to be scheduled in advance
- Occasional evening and weekend hours for outreach activities (see below)
- PCA meetings/training as needed
- PCAs as a group are responsible for performing at least 24 outreach activities each year, including promoting upcoming UCC events and presenting to student groups. In some cases, outreach will be held in the evenings. PCAs are responsible for scheduling these activities, subject to the approval of the Senior Assistant Director and the Director.
Key Qualifications
- Demonstrated strong work ethic
- Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 for Undergraduate students; minimum GPA of 3.5/4.0 for Graduate students (no exceptions)
- Ability to make a 1-year commitment (no exceptions)
- Ability to work a minimum of 12 hours per week (no exceptions)
- All majors invited to apply; however, skills, knowledge, and interest applicable to the position may be best suited for students majoring in communication studies, marketing, psychology, counseling, social work, industrial/organizational psychology, and/or human resource management
- Two previous years of study at the university level – experience which will be beneficial in assisting other students
- Receptive attitude toward constructive criticism
- Interest in career-related issues and activities
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Ability to make, with confidence, presentations to groups of 10+ students
- Ability to plan and prepare professional presentation materials and resources, including PowerPoint presentations
- Interest in developing knowledge and skills in resume writing techniques
- Ability to master information quickly
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
- Creativity
- Strong knowledge of MSWord and PowerPoint; knowledge of Excel and Publisher a plus
- Ability to work effectively without supervision
- Ability to ask for assistance, when needed
- Ability and desire to take initiative, and "pitch in" wherever and whenever needed
- A genuine interest in assisting students with their career-related concerns and questions
Duties and Responsibilities
Resume Critiques
- PCAs will meet with students during scheduled drop-in hours and resume critique sessions to provide feedback on resumes
- PCAs will assist students with making the best presentation possible of their qualifications for employment
Outreach Activities
- PCAs will contact leaders from residence halls, student organizations, student societies, and any groups approved by the Director/Sr. Assistant Director to present information on UCC services
- PCAs will work with student leaders and representatives to identify other kinds of programs and workshops consistent with services offered through the UCC
- PCAs will assume responsibility, with supervision by the Sr. Assistant Director, for implementing the use of presentation materials that have been created for outreach activities, including flyers, PowerPoint presentations, and research on presentation topics
- PCAs will perform general outreach activities throughout the campus, such as distributing promotional flyers and manning campus outreach tables
- PCAs will assist with creation and maintenance of UCC bulletin boards
- PCAs will assist with the creation of signs, posters, banners and/or flyers used to advertise various UCC activities and events
Job Fairs
- PCAs will assist the Events Team with preparation for, and participation in, UCC job fairs, including the following:
- assistance with the creation and posting of job fair marketing materials on campus
- follow-up with employers regarding job fair attendance general questions
- general assistance with set-up and coverage on the day of job fairs
Confidentiality
- PCAs will be committed to carefully preserving the confidential information of students, employers, faculty and staff that they will have access to while working in the UCC
Customer Service Desk
- On some occasions, PCAs will be asked to assist with brief coverage of the Customer Service Desk, which will require knowledge of all UCC services (included in training)
